We were getting lots of signs that Owen was ready to start solid foods. He'll turn 6 months next week, he's been ravenously hungry, and he's been grabbing at our cups and plates when we're trying eat. So we decided yesterday was the big day, and much of what we'd read about starting a baby on solids had us prepared for the worst. But Owen's response was more like, "What took you guys so long? And why aren't you using a bigger spoon?!"

Baby Dedication Weekend
A big thanks to Penny K who took many of the great photos!
This past weekend was super! Coach and DD flew in for the weekend on Friday, we dedicated Owen at church Sunday morning and then we had a celebration lunch at our house with friends and family Sunday afternoon.
The ceremony itself was emotional, meaningful, surreal and nerve-wracking all at once. Owen looked so precious and innocent when they brought him out in the gown Kimeran made for him. And it seemed no matter how our pastor turned him, Owen tried to keep eye-contact with Scott and me as we made a covenant to raise him in a home where he will know God's love. And yet, as serious as the moment was, part of me was standing up there thinking, "Please don't let him make a dirty diaper right now...and if he does, please don't let it be loud enough for the microphone to pick up the sound"!

Master Owen
Owen experienced his first Masters weekend, and his indoctrination into
the world of golf has officially begun! We went all out this year putting up
a house flag, making a cake and outfitting Owen like one of the caddies.
Naturally, he did more to prevent us from watching the tournament
than anything else, but it was still memorable. As I type this, I am sure
Owen is in his crib dreaming of azaleas, Amen Corner and green
jackets.

Just a Spoonful of Sugar
Well the good news is that the Zantac is working. Owen is doing much better since he started taking it, sleeping 6 and 8 hour stretches at night. (For those of you who haven't been updated, his sleeping through the night on Feb. 29th really was just a Leap Year phenomenon. We're not quite there yet...)
The bad news is that the medicine has an awful bitter mint flavor. I'll let Owen tell you exactly what he thinks of it:

Daddy,O
I've gotten several great shots of Scott and Owen together lately, so naturally a blog theme emerged.
When I went back to the high school last week to visit my former teaching colleagues, my friend Susan walked the halls with Owen asking people, "Have you ever met Shelley's husband, Scott? This is exactly what he looks like!" Owen even imitates Scott when they play - watch and listen to them in the video clip below. And when R.E.M. was on the Today Show last week, I thought it would be funny to e-mail Scott a few shots of Owen "watching" the performance, but I was surprised when Owen really did listen. Chip...block.

Gimme 5
Owen turned 5 months old today! The poor little guy celebrated with an unfortunate first...his inaugural fever. He woke up at 3:30 this morning with a temp of 101.1. (Which means I had a "first" today too, and it involved a rectal thermometer.)
When his sleep issues stretched into the third week, I decided they weren't going to be easily explained away by a growth spurt. I took him to the pediatrician yesterday and she diagnosed reflux. So we left the doctor's office with two things: a prescription for Zantac and some other kid's germs. I was trying to help him feel better and I got him sick. Argh!
