When I picked up Owen from Mother's Day Out today, his teacher handed me his bags and then cleared her throat.
"Ahem, we had a little problem with Owen today. He had to be sent to the director's office."
I glanced over at Owen, who was on my hip, and I could tell he knew what we were talking about. He looked down at the floor and picked at his bottom lip.
"Owen wouldn't stop aggressively hugging his classmates. If you and your husband could work with him on hugging softly that would be a big help."
Part of me was embarrassed for Owen, and part of me thought Is she serious? Personally, I find soft hugs about as desirable as limp handshakes.
So what do you think? Will Owen be robbing convenience stores by the time he's 15 if I let this one pass? I can just see him lording over some poor clerk, "Gimme all the money in the register! I got a bear hug and I'm not afraid to use it!!!"

Yeah, that's a strange reason to discipline a two year old. Bring him to Aunt Jenny...I'll teach him some things worthy of the Director's Office! xoxo
I wonder if she was getting any complaints. I personally don't see anythng wrong with giving a person a big hug. That is usually a sign you like somebody, not trying to hurt them. If he hurt one of the children, I could see the reasoning behind the director's concerns. You might just ask him not to hug them so tightly, but that it is alright to hug them. I would approach the director again and ask exactly what happened. Let her know Owen is a loving and compassionate child and is not proan to hurt anybody. Let him come and see us as Jenny says and he can hug all of us as tight as he wants.
My bad!! Every time we hugged I said, "Tighter!" Those were great hugs two weeks ago and they were tight!! This is a good reason to get into trouble! Just teach him not to hug the Big Bully of the school.
That has to be one of the craziest things I have ever heard. Hugging gets you sent to the director's office! Keep on hugging Owen, we could use more of that type of trouble! Love and BIG hugs to you!
FYI.... my Anthony was punished for the same thing when he was in daycare! He's still a great hugger... and he's 12! Hug hard, O! Never underestimate the power of a hug.
