Birthday Party: Invites & Cake

I found space shuttle origami plans online and was able to fold Owen's invites that way.  Since I used cardstock, I had to cheat and hold the back end together with a paperclip.  Origami artists everywhere are tsk-tsking at me!  Their 3D nature required personal delivery too, and Owen had a blast driving around town violating federal law and sneaking them into his friends' mailboxes.

The cake was neither as easy as I hoped nor as impossible as I feared.  I used a 12-in round pan to accommodate all the planets, and I made the pops out of Oreo balls dipped in dyed white chocolate.  My mom was a dream sous chef, staying up past midnight with me washing tiny bowls and returning them to me so I could start mixing the next color.  The hardest parts?

1.  Finding a manly shade of purple for the icing.  No one wants to eat black icing, so I thought deep purple would work for deep space.  My first attempt turned out violet and my second went soupy on me because I got impatient and added everything to the blender at once.  Not smart.

2.  Saturn's rings.  I tried shaping them out of the Oreo mixture itself.  Then I tried pretzels, and finally I ended up pouring sugar.  Pretty excited when that worked!

3.  Eating it all.  We still have half the cake in the fridge.  Anyone want a big piece that will leave you with purple teeth?

Speaking of teeth, we're heading out to take Owen to the dentist.  Gotta wash off all that Halloween candy and birthday cake.  Back soon with the rest of the party photos.

Thanks so much to everyone who came to the party!  Decorations and hoopla aside, sharing the day with you was the best!

It was a time issue. We would have been late to the dentist otherwise, but I hated not to post anything at all.
