5YO Pictures

Owen's already almost 5-and-a-half and his two front teeth are very loose, so I figured it was time to stop procrastinating on the 5yo portraits.  In my defense, I did try to book a portrait session with a local photographer a few months ago, but she never got back to me (and I've got no follow-through).  So while we were at the beach I decided to try it myself.  We waited for a storm to clear to get a pretty sunset and I bribed him with Haagen Dazs.

First I missed his head and then I missed his foot.  It's really hard to pan and shoot!

I told him I was going to make it look like he was doing magic.

So now the big question.  I know I struggled with the orangey-ness of the sunset and I drink too much caffeine so I have camera shake and my focus isn't perfect.  Am I going to regret not getting a pro to take shots of him?  Once those cute baby teeth are gone, I'm toast.  I'm his mom and I know what gargantuan buck teeth I've probably handed down to him.  He's going to be 15 before the rest of his head catches up to the size of them.  Sorry sweetie.  I promise to hook you up with some great orthodontics.

Post edit:  I think that last part comes across like I think he's going to turn into Quasimodo or something.  All I really meant is that I'm pretty sure he's going to have some very grown-up sized teeth soon and this is my last chance to capture him in this phase.  Backpedal, backpedal, extract foot, stop trying to be witty...

Shelley, these are amazing. No way could another photography capture images better than these! It's hard to figure out which is my favorite! Btw, I hope someone got pictures of you at the beach too...mommas should always make it into at least a shot or two even when they would prefer taking the pics! Love these!!! Christine

These look awesome. I can ask my photographer friends to come to your blog and tell you so? This way you know for sure! xoxo

Thank you Christine! Owen snagged the camera and took a picture of me one afternoon- does that count? ;)

That would actually be pretty cool Rebecca! Maybe they could tell me how to edit them to improve them after the fact. How did house pics go?

Shelley, these are terrific!! You have another hobby that could turn into a career. I think they are perfect. They are the type photos that Vivi takes and I love the non-posed pictures. It's who he is.

Professional photos? Are you kidding me Shelley you don't need to pay a photographer these shots are perfect ! They made me cry to see Owen all growing up. To see him on the beach in nature with the beautiful sunset. What a beautiful way to capture him exactly as he is - his little personality is clear in all the pictures. Love them- you are a great momma and photographer and party planner and teacher !! Love you !

That being said a photographer to get you in the photos would be nice - that's why I always wish I could afford one more often so I could be in them instead of behind the camera !!

I think you took some awesome pictures of Owen. You seem to have a knack for that, your Mom does too. Glad I got to see all of you this past weekend. Owen really is growing up fast. Love to all of you.

I don't think any pro photographer could capture Owen in the same spirit that you captured him. These images are so real and so beautiful. I think you've done a beautiful job capturing him.

Thank you for the encouragement everyone! I really wasn't expecting to get this many comments, but I really appreciate them.

And I will take the advice to make sure I get some of me with him soon.

These look great, Shelley!! That being said, *as* a professional photographer, never underestimate the benefit of having a "professional" session- With YOU in it! It's wonderful for you to have these photos of him at this stage in life, but someday he'll want to see him AND you at this stage! :)

That being said, I wouldn't worry about having to hire someone to shoot him with his baby teeth- You did great! Just don't wait to long to have both of you documented! ;)

Thanks Jensey! I've loved the pics you've taken for Rebecca and Joe, and I hear you're just a short road trip up I-65 from us now. That's tempting!
